It was the final day of our vacation, and I’d ventured out alone to purchase a few more souvenirs from the local vendors. Satisfied with my wares, I hurried back to the resort. I cast a weary glance just beyond the locked and armed gates. There stood the abandoned building, a prominent fixture in the blighted region the resort staffed warned us to avoid.
Our patio offered a unique view of the area. During the day, all was still and quiet. After sunset, the building came alive with the sounds of native music, hardy laughter, and loud voices. The smell of local cuisine and cheap liquor filled the air.
After the third night, I asked our housekeeper about attending the party. Her response chilled me:
Señora, Es una fiesta de los muertos
Translation: It is a party of the dead.

How sinister! Thankfully they got warned. That must have killed any curiousity on the spot.
