The Pursuit of Perfection

hello my name is

I am perfectionist.  All “I”s dotted, all “T”s crossed.  Everything in its place and a place for everything.  Angles aligned perfectly at ninety degrees.  Then, and only then, is it presentable.

The problem is I never reach completion because there is always room for more.  More edits, more revisions, more tweaks.  I become stuck in analysis paralysis, always almost, not quite, never enough.  The end result is often failure as I walk away in defeat.

paralysis

Such is the state of my writing career.  I ponder each paragraph on the page.  I scrutinize every word in each sentence.  Not quite satisfied, I walk away, promising myself I’d revisit the issue later.  But the result is still the same: NOTHING.

After years of spinning my wheels (going absolutely nowhere), I am trying something new:

done-is-better-than-perfect-copy

Instead of perfect, I will strive for done.  With that in mind, I will end here.

DONE.

  1. The truth about perfection is that nothing can ever be perfect and thus your analysis is quite correct. In striving for that, there is delay and delay ultimately leads to denial. So, what I do is just write it, look it over a second time, and simply roll with it. Nothing is cast in stone and can always be retouched. Thanks for sharing, we need to keep reminding ourselves of these little things.

Great post. I understand this completely as I am subject to this myself. When I write I can never leave it alone as something always needs to be tweaked. Now I am learning to accept that when it’s done, it’s done. 🙂

Love the graphics and colourful graphics of the blog.I think they are perfect! LOL. As an educator, I find students who get hung up on perfection (especially on first attempts at a new skill), have great difficulty in learning new skills. We have to embrace our fabulous flops! Learn from them and move on!
